A BRIEF HOMILY ON THE 24th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME : BY REV. FR. COSMAS EDOCHIE

A BRIEF HOMILY ON THE 24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE ESSENCE OF BEING HONEST AND FORGIVING IN OUR LIFE
Moses was an examplary and honest leader who put all his trust and hopes in God in every situation. When the Israelites turned against God who brought them out of slavery and bondage in the land of Egypt, and started worshipping an idol, God in his anger decided to wipe them out of the face of the earth, but promised to bless Moses, and make a great nation out of his family. But Moses was not selfish to accept that God should bless only his and destroy others, rather he reminded God of his promise and covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to make the people of Israel as numerous as the sounds of the earth. Not that God does not know what to do, but sometimes he can give us an office or promotion to expose what you think of yourself and others. Moses excelled in the test because through his intercession, God relented from his anger and did not destroy them again (EX. 32;7-11, 13-14).That was a sign of an honest and a compassionate leader, and also an assurance to us that through prayers and constant intercession, our conditions in life can be changed for the better through the power of the almighty God.
St. Paul in his first letter to Timothy acknowledged that he was once a great sinner, who was acting in ignorance by persecuting and balspheming against christians, but was saved by the grace and mercy of God, then reminding us of the necessity to follow our Lord Jesus Christ faithfully in spite of our sinfulness since he came into this world to save sinners.(1Tim.1;12-17). The prodigal son as well came back to himself and accused himself of being a sinner, who have missed the track and decided to go back to the father for amendment and reconciliation which he later did, and was really accepted back through the mercy and generosity of the love of the father (Luke 15;1-32). The forgiving and kind heart of the father of the prodigal son is to teach us that the best thing to do to anyone in trouble or dying in sin is not to judge, insult or hurt him, but to embrace, care and change his condition to be better through love and compassion. We should avoid behaving like the "senior brother of the prodigal son", who never wanted any mercy or forgiveness to be shown to his lost brother, for he refused to go into the house and accused his father of favoritism.
The parables of the lost coin and the lost sheep told by our Lord Jesus Christ were to remind us that, each and everyone of us is important in the eyes of God no matter our status and conditions in life, because God is not interested in the death of a sinner, but wants him to repent and live (Ezek 18;21-33).It is only when we tell ourselves the truth, accept our situatios the way we are, and worship God in spirit and in truth the way we are, then we realize how important we are before God and man.
Therefore, let us ask God to give us the grace through prayers and good works to always come back to him in every circumstance of our lives, to requuest for his divine intervention and compassion, in other to prepare ourselves worthily for the joy of the world to come through Christ our Lord.
